These prices are for the product only. They don't include the price of carpet cushion (or other underlayment) or the price of installation, which can vary widely by region, by installer experience level, and by scheduling demands. You'll want to discuss with your salesperson the prices and options available to you on both cushion and installation.

You'll also want to note that some flooring retailers price their products by square foot and some by sqare yard. Make sure that you're comparing equal measurements when trying to decide on one choice over another.

Star Selection System

Making the best choice is written in the stars.

Shopping for carpet offers many different options. Without a system to accurately compare them, they can start to look alike. Shaw's Star Selection System makes it easy.

The Star System groups product features, price ranges, and warranty packages into three easy-to-understand categories: 3-Star, 4-Star, and 5-Star. You'll find the star rating on showroom labels of all Shaw residential brands. Although there are a few exceptions within categories, the packages of features and benefits for each of the star ratings are outlined below:

  • Shaw Limited 5-Year Quality Assurance Warranty (warranty against manufacturing defects)
  • Limited 5-year generic stain warranty (Stain SafetyTM or other)

4-Star Products
Residential products in this category carry the following warranties:
  • Shaw Limited 7-Year Quality Assurance Warranty

  • Limited 7-year texture retention warranty, if the product meets stringent performance requirements and rating guidelines.
5-Star Products
The 5-Star, or luxury, products in this category carry the following warranties:

PERFORMANCE

On a scale of 1 to 5, this carpet receives a on a Hexapod test, which evaluates appearance retention after simulated foot traffic.

Shaw's performance rating is based on an international test method known as Hexapod. This procedure evaluates appearance retention of carpet.

The instrument used to test the carpet is composed of a circular rotating drum with carpet placed on the inside. Also placed inside the drum is an eight-pound steel ball with six pods. As the drum rotates, the ball falls on the carpet face, simulating footsteps.

After the standard number of rotations, carpets are then assessed using the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) performance rating scale. The lowest rating of 1 means "severe change in appearance" and the highest rating of 5 means "no change in appearance."

FACE WEIGHT

The face weight for this style is  oz./sq.yd.

Face weight is measured as (italics) mass per unit area of pile yarn floor coverings (end italics) according to ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials) method D-5848. Due to several processes involved in manufacturing, such as shearing, the actual finished weight may reflect a variance of up to 7%. The weight is determined by compensating for the factor of commercial moisture regain, as defined in ASTM D-1909. The ASTM measurements are accepted industry norms and the most accurate means of determining face weight.

INSTALLATION

At the time of your purchase, your flooring retailer will either have professional installers on staff or will recommend an independent installer in your area.

In most cases, an estimator will come to your home to measure your floors. The estimator will determine exactly how much carpet you will need and will determine the layout of the carpet in the room. Among other considerations, the estimator will decide where to place seams, how to match patterns, and how to minimize carpet waste. From there, a professional installer will be scheduled.

Different styles, constructions, and patterns of carpet will determine the decisions the estimator and the installer make. Below are general installation instructions from Shaw Technical Services that apply to this particular selection.
